The History of Degradable Plastics

The History of Degradable Plastics

Degradable plastics is a collective term for photo-degradable plastics and biodegradable plastics. Developed countries have been conducting research on photo-degradable plastics since the 1970s, and their concepts are relatively mature. While biodegradable started in the mid-80s, it is developing rapidly and already has its industrial products. It is developed to protect the environment and has great significance. Its excellent performance is obvious and has a broad development prospect. As the degradable plastic masterbatch is blended with the corresponding polymer to produce degradable plastics without changing the original plastic molding process, it has a great role in promoting degradable plastics.

It is generally believed that degradable plastics are a kind of plastics that can be decomposed into low molecules by sunlight radiation or microorganisms in the soil, which should be easy to process and meet the performance of the use requirements in addition to its degradability. The harmful effect of sunlight on polymer materials is the combined effect of ultraviolet light and oxygen, so it is called photo-oxidative degradation. Taking polyolefin as an example, photo-oxidation often causes chain breakage or cross-linking of polymers, and is accompanied by the formation of some oxygen-containing functional groups, such as ketones, carboxylic acids, peroxides and alcohols. The degradation is mainly caused by catalyst residues in the polymer and the initiation of peroxides and carbonyls introduced during processing.

We are dedicated to the professional production and processing of PLA fully biodegradable particles, PBAT/starch-based biodegradable particles, degradable plastic particles, agricultural mulch film, cling film, industrial packaging, agricultural packaging, food packaging, etc., which can be customized according to the customer's application background and needs.
