Land plastic film, the invisible poison?

Land plastic film, the invisible poison?

Farmers and friends with it: temperature, moisture, soil, fertilizer, pest control to make the arid and barren land into a  fruit and vegetable wonderland. But you know what? Whether the film covers an area or annual use is very large, but also because of the difficult to degrade, residue, 78% difficult to recycle, per acre of cumulative plastic residue up to 60-300 kg, microplastic concentration in the soil can be as high as 4800mg/kg!

Research shows that traditional mulch is made of low-density polyethylene, which is super difficult to degrade. These plastics will slowly turn into tiny particles, secretly lurking in the soil, and more frighteningly, they may be absorbed by plants, and then become food for your table and mine. According to incomplete statistics, the world's annual use of agricultural plastic film more than 7.5 million tons, of which China is a large country using film, the annual amount of about 1.45 million tons.

So what is the harm of mulch? After a period of time, the film will be decomposed into fragments, year after year to use, year after year to stay, 78% difficult to recycle. During use it releases toxins, additives, and these hazardous substances can seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater. Secondly, microplastics are mistakenly eaten by organisms and enter the food chain, thus destroying the ecology, which in severe cases can lead to a reduction of crop yields by more than 30%.

So what should we do?At the household level, we should choose organic fruits and vegetables, wash them adequately, support environmentally friendly agriculture and raise awareness. At the social level, promote biodegradable mulch; establish recycling systems; improve agronomy; and innovate in science and technology.
